Ordinary Things Done Extraordinarily Well

While Deciem’s founder may have found himself in more than his share of drama since the inception of his brand, if you allow the dust to settle, what you find beneath it is a truly revolutionary brand. For those not well-versed in peptides and retinoids, their low-end line, amusingly named The Ordinary, may seem somewhat overwhelming. For the studied elite, however, expert in the Korean 10 Step Routine, on the cutting edge of dermatology, Deciem is the proverbial Holy Grail.

The Ordinary is not inaccessible to the less knowledgeable either, despite the laundry-list of obscure chemicals it hawks on its corner of the Deciem website. As it explains on the product page for their Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA serum:

Alpha Arbutin reduces the looks of spots and hyper-pigmentation. It's used at a high 2% concentration versus a standard concentration of 1% and supported with a next-generation form of Hyaluronic Acid for enhanced delivery. Alpha Arbutin is much stronger in effect than Arbutin or Beta Arbutin.

This may feel as though your skin care routine has somehow morphed into a science experiment, but to us that’s half the fun, and all the more useful, as it allows us to learn about and truly understand the active ingredients and chemicals we’re applying to our skin, something a product named something more marketable doesn’t foster. Rather than going through the ingredient list of some generally designated “brightening crème” to determine if it contains any parabens or sulfates, riffling through fillers and fragrances, The Ordinary allows you to pay for only what is necessary: the active in it’s purest form.

A commitment to transparency on both the product and business side of things paired with minimalist packaging and well-priced, well-sourced ingredients at the peak of purity places Deciem as one of our favorite skin-care brands. The fact that they’re cruelty free is just the cherry on top.
